KK Nayak Global Inclusive Disaster Management Conference

A disaster, natural or industrial, can happen anytime. Natural disasters may be anything caused by the forces of nature like a tsunami, flood, hurricane, etc. Industrial disasters are those caused by negligence on the part of management and the workforce. An example of an industrial disaster that happened in Madhya Pradesh, India is the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the effects of which are being seen even today in the genetic composition of local residents’ future generations.

As the saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure”, be forewarned and prepared to face disasters always helps in saving precious human life and property. Giving compensation to the families of disaster victims fails to achieve anything tangible. Instead, our nation and citizens would be better off by furthering research in the field of Disaster Management. A government study of 10 major disasters in the past decade in India has revealed that damages caused by such natural hazards have resulted in losses that account for as high as 66% of all public-sector losses. The country needs a strong and reliable Disaster Management System in place.

Disaster Management can be defined as the organization and management of resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies, in particular, preparedness, response, and recovery in order to lessen the impact of disasters. To further this objective, a steering and technical committee comprising of HSE leaders from India and abroad has been set up. This committee has been entrusted with the responsibility of hosting a mega-event focusing on disaster preparedness and ways to mitigate after-effects of natural and industrial disasters. Mr. K K Nayak, General Manager HSE- Corporate at Vedanta Ltd (Cairn Oil & Gas) is also a core member of the steering committee, for he strongly believes in the concept of Sustainable Development.
